Safety tip was not for publication….. we still believe in safety and learning from others is still a good thing. Be careful out there and stay outside the cockpit, when appropriate.
Every thing you wanted to know about propellers and more was presented by Steve and Art. The propeller is probably the most neglected part of the aircraft.
When selecting a prop, plane manufacture / owner can but not the sales people.
Three prop Manufactures:
McCauley – wood and aluminum and CSP (constant speed prop)
Sensenich – wood and fixed pitched prop only
Hartzel – CSP only
MT – Carbon Fiber
10 Commandments of propellers:
Clean with oily rags only
No water sprayed into hubs – CSP
Tightness checks
Track Check – hand turn with pointer at bottom
Head Overhaul times
Check Appearences
Do Paint
Do Wax
Read the Owners Manual
Do not push or pull on Prop or spinner
No Gravel - keep the taxi ways clean
Dynamic Balancing is highly recommended – estimated cost $300
Nicks and dings are critical to longevity of the propeller – can be repaired easily
CSP controlled by engine oil. Exercise them well during run-up check.
New blades are usually square when new – rounded after repairs.
Get your shop warrenties.
Pamphlets were handed out and was a great presentation that was very informative.
· Project Review:
Les Conwell – working on his canopy and troublesome tail cone.
Dean Psiropoulos – Finished wiring and the wind screen
