President’s Corner:
Here we are in that winter
weather pattern again, and we
all know what that means. Improved performance, better
lift on
take off, great visibility... yes, but don't forget that
with cool
winter fronts can come strong winds and quick moving rains.
Although it should be
second nature for any pilot in today's
world, it's important to always get a detailed update on
the
weather before you're ready to lift off. It seems like every
couple
of years we have more and more resources available to us
to
make good weather decisions. Of course we still have
1-800-
WX-BRIEF, the Weather
Channel, and our local news stations
but we also have several good Internet options to assist
us. One
site that I like to use is Aviation Digital Data Services
(ADDS),
but there are many others. In addition to the services we
have on
the ground some GPS units now can provide real time
weather
while you're in the air. The point is that getting a good
perspective on the weather you are about to fly in is critical to
a
safe flight and the comfort of you and your passengers.
Don't
leave home with out it.
On another topic I had the
pleasure this past month of
flying my first Young Eagles flight. Les Conwell
called me to let
me know that the Vandenberg EAA chapter 175 had a
busload of
high school students and they could probably use an extra
plane
or two to help out. From our chapter Les, Jerry Lee, and
I flew
over and participated. Les and Jerry have a lot of
experience
doing this but this was a first for me. I flew 6 students,
none of
which have ever flown in a GA plane before. It was very rewarding
and a wonderful experience, I can't wait for the next
opportunity.

is 9:00am
Pancake Breakfast schedule
for February 24 at the new Hidden Lake Pavilion. Time to be
announced later.
D. Old Business
No old business discussed.
E. New Business
A “Not for Profit”
organization (which Chapter 791 is) requires 2 Directors to hold down
the fort if all other officers quit or take off. Harris
Sullivan graciously accepted the position.
John would like to
highlight the builders of the chapter with an update from each as part of the
meeting agenda.
F. Safety Tip:
Peter Goutierre
gave us some good and timely reminders that our airplanes do not stand up
very well to the elements that Mother Nature can sometimes
throw at us. Remember to get the
briefing, and turn around if the briefing isn’t what you are
seeing out the window. Confucius says;
Best loose faith than
loose ass.
Another safety tip was to
be aware of the sea fog along the coast. It is not readily visible and
you may need to practice that 180-degree turn you once
learned in your original pilot training.
G. Presentations:
Rex Myers gave a great
presentation on “Giving Back to Aviation”. Pay it forward – Pay it
back were the main themes that he blended in with personal
experiences in the aviation
community and his flying business endeavors.
H. 50/50 Winner -Total was
$33. Winner was Jeanie – friend of Warren Cheatham.
Adjournment: John Edwards
adjourned meeting at 8:10 pm. The next general meeting
will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday,
February
14th, 2005 at
meeting is scheduled for Valentines Day. John Edwards will
advise if any changes will be made
to the next meeting date. (Nothing so
far, Feb. 4th.)
Submitted: John Voda, Secretary
Question of the Month: By
Bob Berghoefer
In January we asked,” What
had no wheels, floats, or waterproof hull (Circa 1932 US Navy), yet
it made many successful landings far out to sea. What
was this strange thing”?
Answer: The Curtiss F9C-2 SparrowHawk used a
Skyhook to attach itself to Navy Airships. After
attaching itself, it was drawn up and into the Airship. The
Navy took the wheels off at least one of the planes to gain speed and lighten
it.
For February we want you
to match the plane to its nickname.
