The Chapter’s regular meeting will be held on August 8th. Future chapter meeting will also be held on the second Wednesday of each month, and will be continued on that date for the foreseeable future. Meetings are open to anyone with an interest in building, restoring, and flying airplanes. The meetings will be held in Art Michaud’s hangar in the Hidden Lake Community starting at 7:00 PM. There should be ample parking along the Merlin street sides. Remember to get into the community, you must hit the “Key” button twice and then enter the secret code 2670.  Hidden Lake Community is off Ridge Rd about three miles east of Little Rd.

President’s Corner:

            Changes in the wind...

Well all good things must come to an end, as we've been discussing at our last couple of chapter meeting's it's time for us to move on to new grounds.

We have been very fortunate to have had the privilege to meet in Art's hanger for the past three years and I know I've said it before but I'll say it again we owe him a great deal of thanks.

But now it's time to look to the future... We will have some challenges and these challenges will no doubt bring opportunities for all of us. This is where having a better understanding of the type of chapter we are, or said differently, a understanding of the types of aviation related activities that have the most meaning to us as chapter members, will help us move into the future.

We appear to have interest in all three categories that we discussed back in May. As a refresher those three categories are Social, Project Building, and Flying. Many clubs have interest in only one category, or a very strong interest in one and a passing interest in the others. I believe that the better EAA chapters have a good balance in all three and to that end our chapter has a good balance in all three as well. For that we should all be thankful.

Future activities relating to our relocation, and future programs supporting the three categories are going to need a higher level of energy from our chapter. It's becoming apparent that we will most likely be meeting in multiple locations over the next few months and this is going to require a higher level of organization, communications, and patience. Also I think we

would all like to have more meaningful programs that support the interest of our members. Every one of our members has something that the rest of our members can learn from and or enjoy hearing about, so what's your story???

My point of course is that we need everyone's help as we move the chapter forward. That could mean volunteering to assist or run a program in support of our chapter, or helping move chairs from one location to another, or, well you get the picture. Of course the one action that everyone must do is to share your opinions and ideas with the rest of the chapter... So keep the energy up, and please don't let the relocation of our meetings weaken our chapter.

Fly Safely

G.                            Meeting Program:

Emilio Malave Jr. Front Line Manager, FAA Air Traffic Organization, gave a spirited talk on ATC in the Tampa operations.

Here are his credentials – 7 years in Navy ATC, Pittsburg International, Jacksonville and now Tampa ATC,  3 yrs Quality Assurance Specialist, 1 Year Plans and Procedures Specialist and 1 Year Training Specialist.

He is in a supervisory position with ATC that deals with incursions and incidences.  He also trains and manages a crew of controllers.  He made a point in saying that big brother is watching both the controllers and pilots at the National Command Center. Be aware of where you are at all times, especially around the Class B airspace.  Emilio also said that things at FAA are in some flux, there are changes in the program to make the FAA run more like a business.  This is a considerable change to both the controllers and “Front Line” management.  There was some mention of pay issues, and some details were expressed.

In recent years, $800 million was paid out in lawsuits over miscommunications.  So again the controllers are on alert to not make those type of mistakes.  New controllers are somewhat harder to find now that there was changes in the way new trainees are hired and trained.  This makes it harder for the experienced controllers in busy situations.

Milio also went on to tell us about not letting the system or the controllers intimidate you the pilot. Fly your airplane, and if need be call Milio or one of the supervisors on duty at ATC and remember that everything is taped.  Be prepared when going into larger  airports, 60 % of runway incursions did not have an airport diagram in the cockpit.  And don’t forget the phrase – “SAY AGAIN”   VFR flight following is still as available not mandatory or expected in busy airspace.

Questions and issue resolution may be directed to Milio at 813-371-7700.

In summary, this was a great discussion of the local ATC and gave a great insight of the conditions on other side of the microphone.  Also reminded me a little of Pete and his grand talks of flying - only the other side of the microphone.

H.                Projects: Les Cronwell indicated all things are going well with the G-4 and the Canopy is coming along. However a snag developed when he went to mount his engine. Rodney Daulton has started on his upper wings on his Skybolt. John Voda reported on finishing up the body work on the tail and rudder of his Lancair. Steve Carper stated that his has experienced a 5 mph increase in speed with his new prop.  Do you thing that this was a commercial message.  Thanks Steve and Art.  George Psiropoulos mentioned that he is continuing on his RV-4.

I.                   50/50 Winner  - Total was $30.00. The drawing winner was Les Cronwell.

Adjournment: John Edwards adjourned meeting at 2115 hrs. The next general meeting will be at 1900 hrs on Wednesday, August 8th, 2005 at 10524 Merlin Drive.
